Dumpster rental software for swaps and exchanges

A buyer checklist for roll-off operators. Vendor documentation checked September 24, 2026.

The buying question

A swap is not just another pickup. The full container leaves the customer, a different container arrives, and the rental may continue. Software should keep the two physical assets and the two service actions distinct while preserving the customer's order, driver instructions and billing history. This becomes especially important when an operator is juggling exchanges, pickups, disposal sites and several containers at one customer location.

Shortlist a product only after a demo shows the complete exchange, including a late change and a weight ticket. A general claim to offer “dispatch” or “inventory” does not establish that the returning and replacement containers are handled correctly.

What the vendors document

ProductPublicly documented exchange workflowStill test in a demo
DocketExchange tasks link to an existing drop-off and show pickup and replacement drop-off as two sides of the task. Dispatch shows both. Its help center says the pickup side's weight allowance and overage rate govern a completed exchange.Schedule a different-sized replacement, alter the driver assignment and inspect the resulting customer invoice. Confirm the required plan and settings.
EquipDashThe vendor describes drop, swap and collection as visits against one rental, with containers blocked while out and driver job lists updated on phones.Show how the returning unit becomes available, how a replacement is reserved, and whether the swap's disposal ticket and overage charge reach the invoice.
DSQ HaulerIts product page documents order entry, real-time dispatch, driver status and photos, numbered-container inventory and future availability. A vendor article describes how completed deliveries and pickups update a location's state.Have the vendor demonstrate a true swap, not two unrelated jobs, including a changed pickup, both container IDs and billing evidence. Public sources do not establish the full exchange billing path.

These are descriptions from vendor materials, not hands-on reviews. A feature may depend on configuration or a particular plan.

A six-step swap-out demo

  1. Create a rental for a numbered container at a specific customer site. Reserve another unit for a future delivery to a different customer.
  2. Request an exchange to a different size. Confirm that the original pickup and replacement drop-off are linked to the first rental and that neither container is double-booked.
  3. Move the exchange time after routes have been assigned. Check what the dispatcher and driver each see, and whether the customer needs a separate confirmation.
  4. Complete the visit with the actual returning and replacement container IDs, driver notes and photos. Check whether the status and future availability of both units update.
  5. Attach the disposal weight ticket to the returning unit. Enter a weight above its agreed allowance and confirm which allowance and rate the invoice uses.
  6. Cancel or postpone the final pickup. Verify that the replacement stays at the site, its rental clock remains correct and the unit is not sold as available.

Ask the seller to export the resulting task, container history and invoice. If the workflow must be reconstructed from texts and spreadsheets, the demo has not proved that the software solves the exchange problem.

Which shortlist fits the problem?

For a waste-specific workflow with detailed public exchange and overage documentation, start by testing Docket. If booking, rental inventory and driver runs must share one schedule, test EquipDash. If a numbered fleet and live dispatch are the first need, include DSQ Hauler but insist on the complete swap demonstration. Compare the full subscription and any onboarding, payments, messaging or accounting costs for the tier that actually completes your scenario; do not select on an advertised starting price alone.

The container inventory comparison covers asset IDs and future availability. The weight-ticket guide goes deeper on overage and extra-day billing. For a broader starting point, see software for small dumpster fleets.
